Overview

Midwest Technical Institute’s Springfield campus is the successor to MTI’s original Illinois operation. The school was established in 1995, and the current Springfield campus opened in 2007. Today it offers more than 10 career programs spanning the skilled trades, healthcare and transportation.

For TradeSchoolScout, the main attractions are HVAC/R, Welding, Welding & Pipefitting and Electrician training. MTI added its Springfield Electrician program in September 2025, making electrical training one of the campus’s newest skilled-trade options.

Programs Offered

Current MTI offerings include:

• HVAC/R Technician
• Welding
• Welding & Pipefitting
• Electrician
• Medical Assistant
• Dental Assistant
• Medical Coding
• Basic Nursing Assistant
• Phlebotomy
• CDL / Truck Driving
• Other campus-dependent programs

HVAC/R Technician

The HVAC/R program is approximately 9 months and combines classroom study with hands-on training.

Students study areas such as:

• Heating systems
• Air conditioning
• Refrigeration
• Electrical systems
• Troubleshooting
• Installation and service
• HVAC safety

A major distinction for Springfield is that its HVAC/R Technician program is accredited by HVAC Excellence, in addition to MTI’s institutional ACCSC accreditation.

Electrician

MTI’s Electrician program is now available at all MTI campuses. The Springfield program began in September 2025.

Training is designed for entry-level work and covers practical electrical concepts and installations. Students should verify local Illinois or municipal licensing and apprenticeship requirements because completing a vocational program does not automatically grant an electrician license.

Welding & Pipefitting

MTI offers both welding and expanded Welding & Pipefitting training.

Current MTI program lengths are approximately:

• Welding — about 7 months
• Welding & Pipefitting — about 10 months

Training typically includes multiple welding processes and practical fabrication skills.

Other Career Programs

Springfield also offers several shorter allied-health programs, including:

• Medical Assisting — about 9 months
• Dental Assisting — about 9 months
• Nursing Assistant — about 7 weeks
• Phlebotomy — about 5 weeks
• Medical Coding — about 9 months

Medical Assisting at the Springfield campus is programmatically accredited by CAAHEP.

Online Programs

As of June 2026, MTI states that its only fully online program is Medical Billing & Coding through MTI Online.

That means HVAC, electrician and welding students should expect substantial in-person shop and lab training.

Tuition & Financial Aid

MTI does not display one simple current Springfield tuition table on its campus page. The school directs students to its catalog for current program pricing.

MTI is accredited by ACCSC and approved by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in federal financial-aid programs. Financial assistance and scholarships are available to qualifying students.

In 2026, MTI reported awarding $305,000 in scholarships to 92 high-school seniors across its campuses.

Student Reviews

Based on your supplied listing data:

Average Rating: 3.8 (56 Reviews)

This is a moderate rating. Prospective students should pay close attention to recent reviews about the specific department they are considering rather than judging the entire campus from the overall score.

Enrollment Tips

• Request the exact current 2026 tuition and supply costs before signing
• HVAC applicants should note that Springfield’s program has HVAC Excellence accreditation
• Electrician students should ask how the program connects to local apprenticeship and licensing requirements
• Welding students should compare the 7-month Welding program with the longer Welding & Pipefitting track
• Ask which programs offer evening schedules
• Complete FAFSA before evaluating final out-of-pocket cost
• Ask for current graduate and employment disclosures for your specific program

Bottom Line

MTI Springfield is a solid central-Illinois choice for students seeking HVAC, electrical, welding or pipefitting training in less than a traditional college timeframe. Its standout feature is the additional HVAC Excellence accreditation for the Springfield HVAC/R program, while ACCSC accreditation and federal-aid eligibility add structure for students considering private career-school training.
