Overview

Michigan Career & Technical Institute is unlike a typical private trade school. MCTI is a state-operated vocational training institution designed specifically to prepare Michigan residents with disabilities for competitive employment. Its main Plainwell campus sits on Pine Lake and combines occupational training with vocational rehabilitation, career assessment, housing and student-support services.

The Plainwell campus offers 11 technical training programs. MCTI also operates accredited extension training in Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo and Fowlerville. Industry advisory committees help keep curriculum and equipment aligned with workplace needs.

Important 2026 Schedule Notice

MCTI currently says its Winter 2026 term, scheduled for October 5–December 18, has been canceled because of ongoing construction. Students who have not finished during the current Fall term are expected to resume studies January 11, 2027. Career Assessment students may be placed on program waitlists as space becomes available.

Programs Offered

Plainwell programs currently include:

• Automotive Technology
• Cabinetmaking / Millwork
• Commercial Printing
• Culinary Arts
• Custodial
• Industrial Electronics
• Information Technology
• Machine Technology
• Pharmacy Technician
• Retail Marketing
• Certified Nursing Assistant-related training through MCTI’s broader system

Automotive Technology

Automotive students learn diagnosis and repair involving brakes, suspension, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. MCTI states that students work toward Michigan automotive certifications and national ASE credentials.

Tuition & Financial Aid

For the academic year beginning Fall 2026, MCTI publishes the following per-term rates:

Cost Michigan Resident Out-of-State
Tuition $2,267 $3,291
On-campus room & board $1,912 $1,912
Lab fee $233.40 $233.40
Other required fees $135.21 $135.21
On-campus total $4,547.61 $5,571.61
Off-campus total $2,635.61 $3,659.61

These figures are effective for the Fall term beginning July 2026.

A particularly important distinction is sponsorship. Students referred through Michigan Rehabilitation Services or the Bureau of Services for Blind Persons receive tuition plus dormitory room and board free, according to MCTI’s admissions page.

Students with a high-school diploma or GED are generally required to complete FAFSA before entering a trade, even when MRS is sponsoring them.

Student Reviews

Based on your supplied listing data:

Average Rating: 3.7 (149 Reviews)

Applicants should also consider MCTI’s unusual eligibility and vocational-rehabilitation model when interpreting reviews; it does not operate like a conventional open-admission trade school.

Enrollment Tips

Applicants cannot simply enroll directly. They must generally be 18 or older, have a documented disability and be referred through an approved rehabilitation or workforce agency. Career Assessment Services is typically part of determining the appropriate training pathway.

Because of the current construction-related interruption, anyone applying now should specifically ask when their intended program is expected to accept new students.

Bottom Line

Michigan Career & Technical Institute can be an exceptional option for eligible students with disabilities, particularly because qualifying vocational-rehabilitation sponsorship can cover tuition and residential costs. Its strongest trade-oriented options include automotive, machine technology, cabinetmaking and industrial electronics. However, the unusual admissions process and the current Winter 2026 cancellation make it important to contact MCTI before planning a start date.
