Overview

United Technologies Center, commonly called UTC, is one of Maine’s largest Career and Technical Education high schools. Located in Bangor, it provides eligible students with access to more than 20 technical programs, ranging from electrical, plumbing and welding to diesel mechanics, healthcare, automotive technology and digital media.

Students typically remain enrolled at their home high school while attending UTC for a morning or afternoon technical session. Programs run for either one or two years, depending on the field. UTC is supported by dozens of communities throughout the Bangor region and serves students from public, private and homeschool settings.

UTC also has separate continuing-education offerings for adults, making the school relevant beyond traditional high-school CTE enrollment.

Electrical Training

UTC’s Electrical program covers residential and commercial wiring and is designed to help students build skills toward the Maine electrician career ladder.

The school specifically identifies credentials such as:

Maine Electrical Helper’s License
OSHA 10

The curriculum is also intended to support progression toward future journeyman licensing requirements.

Plumbing & Heating

The Plumbing & Heating pathway provides practical instruction while preparing students toward Maine’s plumbing licensing pathway. UTC describes the program as preparation for the Maine State Journeyman Exam, although students must still satisfy all state experience and licensing requirements before becoming licensed.

Automotive, Diesel & Welding

Automotive students receive hands-on training in areas including brakes, safety and vehicle service while working toward industry credentials.

Diesel Mechanics covers engines, brakes, hydraulics, electronics and heavy-equipment diagnosis.

Welding students learn multiple welding processes and can work toward industry certifications.

Tuition & Financial Aid

UTC is a public Career and Technical Education school. Eligible secondary students generally attend through their home school rather than paying private-school tuition.

Because regular CTE enrollment is secondary education, FAFSA-style college financial aid does not generally apply.

UTC also advertises continuing-education courses for adults. Adult tuition, eligibility and course availability are separate from the high-school programs and should be checked through UTC’s adult-education system.

Average Rating: 4.8 (32 Reviews)

That is a strong rating, although students and families should also compare the particular program, available certifications and post-graduation opportunities rather than relying on reviews alone.

Enrollment Tips

• Determine whether your home high school sends students to UTC
• Apply early for high-demand programs
• Compare one-year and two-year options carefully
• Ask which industry certifications are included
• For electrical and plumbing, understand how school hours count toward Maine licensing requirements
• Ask about adult education separately if you have already graduated from high school

Bottom Line

United Technologies Center is one of the strongest public CTE options in the Bangor area, especially for students interested in electrical, plumbing, welding, automotive, diesel, construction or emerging EV technology. With more than 20 career programs and one- or two-year scheduling, UTC allows students to gain substantial hands-on career experience while still completing high school.
